Welcome to the 2025 iRead Summer Reading Program edition of the
Reading Dragons and Friends, featuring the art of Carey Pietsch.
Kids can struggle with reading. Skills develop at different rates for each person, & if
something else is working against them, like dyslexia, reading can be really hard work.
By reading regularly kids build up their reading skills at their own pace,& find joy in reading.
Reading Dragons and Friends is made for libraries by librarians.
Developed at Dover Public Library by Librarians Liz Strauss and Mallory Thompson,
the 2025 iRead Summer Reading Program edition is a short 2-month version of
Reading Dragons & Friends carefully created for libraries Summer Reading Program (SRP).
What are Reading Dragons and how do they motivate kids to read?
Children track the time they spend reading whatever they want to read in 30-minute increments to earn
collectible, playable cards featuring mythical creatures. For the 2025 iRead Summer Reading Edition,
Carey Pietsch has created 8 majestic dragon families to share with your community.
Kids will earn 32 cards for 16 hours of reading across a period of 2 months.
The Reading Tracker Explained
For every 30 minutes read, Readers will check off one box on their tracker.
When they complete a row of 4 boxes, they can choose a dragon family to collect.
They will get 4 matching cards featuring 4 different ages in that dragon family: Egg, Baby, Teen & Adult.
Kids can work at their own pace to complete reading.
This means that some kids may earn all of their cards for that month in the first two week.
Some kids may not complete all of their reading for the month because of vacations etc.
Kids will be allowed to make up reading time to complete their previous month. There is no penalty.
For example, your tracker is set up for 2 months June and July.
August can be used as a grace period where kids can catch up on reading for any rewards
that they missed in June and July. On the inside of the tracker they can see all of the dragons they can collect.
(This grace period is only for earning Reading Dragon & Friends' family set cards.
Timed reading to qualify for the 2025 Summer Reading Program Grand Prizes ends August 2nd.)
NOTE:
The time a child spends reading can be logged on both our regular Summer Reading log &
the Reading Dragons” Reading Tracker. Our Summer log tracks in 20-minute increments,
while the Reading Dragons’ Tracker is 30-minute increments, which may seem confusing.
What it means is that for every 2 hours reading a child can earn 1 dragon family.
6 Summer reading log spaces (120 minutes) = 4 Reading Dragons’ Tracker boxes (120 minutes).
One hundred twenty (120) minutes is what a person needs to earn them a Dragon Family.
120 minutes = 2 hours
This is an optional addition (side quest) and is not required
for participating in our Summer Reading Program.
