Beans, beans, beans!

6/23/2020

Supplies:

  • Seeds
  • Paper towel
  • Resealable plastic bag (We used a quart size)
  • Note: We used pinto beans, but you can try this with other seeds too.

Here is a really simple way to start beans and other seeds.

Instructions:
  1. Get your paper towel wet then wring it out and fold it. (If it's too wet the seeds will get moldy)
  2. Put your damp, folded paper towel inside the resealable plastic bag.
  3. Place your beans inside the plastic bag between the bag and the damp paper towel.
  4. Seal the plastic bag. (You want to make sure it's closed tight to the paper towel doesn't dry out.)
  5. Place your plastic bag in a warm, sunny spot like a window.
  6. Check on your seeds every day or two.
    1. You may need to add a little bit of water to your paper towel if it dries out.
    2. If you notice any mold - change the paper towel out for a different one.
  7. Watch how your plant starts growing, usually in 3-5 days.
  8. After your plant develops roots and the start of its stem you will probably want to plant it in the dirt to see how big it can get.

We found a cute house on the Green Kid Crafts website that we colored and cut the center out of then taped the bag to the back of it and will be putting it up in the window with the beans facing outside. We also have Bean Plant Observation Journal where we can make notes about what we see when we check on our seeds.
