Supplies Needed:

  • Sunscreen
  • Dark paper (black, brown, dark blue)
  • Q-tip, Paintbrush, clean finger
  • A Sunny day (no rain)
  • Somewhere flat outside to put your painting
  • Rocks to keep it from blowing away
Picture

What to do

  • “Paint” a picture using the sunscreen and your Q-tip, paintbrush, or clean finger. The picture can be whatever you like.
  • Take your picture outside after you are done with the painting part.
  • Find a nice, sunny part of the yard and place your picture on a table or even on the ground.
  • Put rocks at the corners or sides of your picture so it doesn’t blow away.
  • Leave your picture directly in the sun for a bit. The picture above was out in the sun for a couple of hours. The longer it can be in the sun the more change you should see.
  • Check on you painting. Can you see a difference between where your painting is and the rest of the paper? How about under the rocks holding it down? Do you think leaving it in the sun longer will make more of a difference?

Note:
You must have a dry, sunny day for this project to work

Thanks to the Team Cartwright website for this fun idea! They have some really great idea, so you will want to check them out

Make Your own flat erwin

To make your own Erwin the Gnome all you need is:
  • Erwin the Gnome template
  • Crayons, markers, or paint to decorate Erwin
  • Glue or glue stick
  • Scissors
Decorate the pieces of Erwin however you like. You can color his hat and body the same or different. You could even cut the different parts out using construction paper if you like.
Picture
Once you have Erwin decorated cut out the pieces and start putting them together.

To Put Erwin Together:

  • Glue the shoe on the bottom side (round side) of the body.
  • Glue the nose (oval shape) near the top side of the beard.
  • Glue the beard on the top side of the body pattern (straight side).
  • Apply glue along the straight end of the mitten cutouts and attached them on each side of the body.
  • Keep the rest of the hand free from glue
  • Glue the hat on the top side of the beard, overlapping the nose slightly.

And now your Erwin is put together! You can decorate him some more if you like. Take him on adventures, read to him, and have FUN!!!!
Does your Erwin need a friend or do you want to make another gnome for a holiday? Before you glue Erwin together you can take a pencil and draw around all the pieces to make another pattern that you can use on construction paper or card stock you might have at home.
